PR.EFACE. iX where Hahnemann's drugs are required, is beyond all proportion greater than the number of the prescriptions where such drugs as Oleum animale, Niccolum, Croton tiglium, Phellandrium, Gratiola, Kali hydriodicum, &c., are desired. In a much frequented pharmacy, which we have here in Paris, these last mentioned drugs were not desired in the space of fifteen years except in a very few instances, whereas the drugs contained in Hahnemann's original Materia Medica were called for many thousands of times. There are several other drugs which have shared the same fate of oblivion, although their provings have travelled beyond the boundaries of France. Among these drugs there are some which possess a considerable amount of pharmacodynamic properties; and, if they have been disregarded up to this day, must it not be owing to the fact that practitioners have as yet too little confidence in the practical value of the provings? In selecting my materials for the present edition of the manual, I have adopted the same rule by which the public seems to have been guided so far; and, if my critics should not be satisfied with this mode of proceeding, they ought to charge the fault on the taste of the public, not on my own limited understanding. Indeed, upon the whole, I find that I have been pretty generous in not expunging such drugs as Paris quadrifolia, Lactuca,'araxacum, and others, which, with their present deficient pathogenesis, will never be of much general use in practice. I might indeed have omitted more than ten other drugs, contenting myself with a simple reference to the Symptomen-Codex; but I felt for those unhappy physicians whose peace of mind would have been seriously disturbed by such an arrangement; and I concluded that, for the present, these comparatively valueless drugs might remain until they could be fitly replaced in subsequent editions, by the provings of more useful agents, by which means every subsequent
